Variable Data Printing

Color-Logic Enables Digital Variable Metallic Data Printing Using Adobe InDesign

West Chester, Ohio, USA; October 2021— Designing for digital printing is fast becoming a critical issue for agencies and freelance graphic designers. The ability of digital processes to support variable data printing means that designers for both commercial printing and packaging must learn how to handle the complex files involved. Add metallic printing to the equation, and many designers become overwhelmed with preparing the necessary white ink masks, as well as the peculiarities of merging databases with otherwise simple print files. To address these issues and to vastly simplify the graphic design work involved, Color-Logic has prepared a detailed tutorial specifically detailing the steps involved, using the Color-Logic software with Adobe InDesign to produce print files guaranteed to clear all the hurdles presented by digital presses.

Variable data printing on digital platforms is nothing new, but Color-Logic brings an entirely new dimension when digitally printing on metallic substrates with white ink or toners for commercial print applications. Digital printing with white ink or toner on metallic stocks requires designers to make a white ink mask. If any change is made to an element, font, or image, a new white ink mask is required unless the designer is using Color-Logic. By using Color-Logic at the design stage with the digital output on metallic stock, a design can include variable foil colors and embellishments in fonts, elements, or images. Coupons, magazine covers, wedding invitations, greeting cards, posters, and tags are just a few of the applications appropriate for variable data metallic digital printing.

Adobe InDesign now has variable data support built in, so by using InDesign with the Color-Logic Design Suite, any designer can easily add metallic variable data into their clients' printed marketing pieces by using a licensed and certified Color-Logic printer. To demonstrate the ease and strength of the Color-Logic/Adobe InDesign combination, Color-Logic has released a short video explaining how digital metallic variable data printing can be used to create a striking magazine cover. The video can be seen at
here. The Color-Logic system is compatible with most major digital cut sheet pressed (HP Indigo, Ricoh, Xeikon, and Xerox) with white ink and a RIP compatible with Color-Logic.

Discussing the Color-Logic/Adobe InDesign breakthrough, Mark Geeves, Color-Logic Director of Sales and Marketing, said; "Many industry reports attest to the value of variable data printing and metallics as relates to quality and consumer appeal. The 280 Color-Logic metallic colors and unlimited embellishments, together with Adobe Indesign, is a game-changer that drives up response rates for all commercial print applications."

With Color-Logic, HP Mosaic Users Can Move into Metallic Variable Data Printing

West Chester, Ohio, USA; May 2021— Color-Logic has announced that licensed Color-Logic printers with HP Indigo cut sheet and digital label presses can now utilize their HP Mosaic software with Color-Logic Pattern-FX to automatically generate the white ink masks required to do variable data printing on metallic substrates. Discussing the capability, Color-Logic CoFounder and Chief Technical Officer Richard Ainge said: "At Color-Logic, we believe that All Print Starts With Design, and we have expanded the capability of HP Mosaic to permit using white ink on a metallic substrate not only to produce metallic colors but also for print embellishments and variable data work. Producing metallic colors and variable embellishments on metallic substrates requires a separate white ink mask for each unique page, and Color-Logic produces these automatically. Licensed Color-Logic printers can find detailed instructions for using Color-Logic with HP Mosaic inside the Color-Logic S.M.A.R.T Centre."

Color-Logic Simplifies MetallicVariable Data Printing

West Chester, Ohio, USA; April 2021— Digital printing is rapidly gaining market share around the world--often because digital presses can easily print variable data. Many printers choose digital presses because of their ability to easily print variable data. And now, with Color-Logic, the variable data benefits of the latest presses are available when printing with white ink or toner on a metallic stock.

Commenting on the use of white ink on metallic substrate, Color-Logic Director of Sales and Marketing Mark Geeves said: "Working with white ink or toner on a metallic substrate requires that the graphic designer or prepress operator prepare a white ink mask as part of the digital file set. With digital variable data printing, each page requires a unique white ink mask. Except with Color-Logic! The proprietary Color-Logic software automatically creates each different white ink mask, eliminating the extra labor, and making the labor cost of variable data printing on metallic substrate no more expensive than on conventional substrate."

Discussing the financial implications for digital printers, Geeves continued: "When used to prepare files for printing variable data jobs on digital presses, Color-Logic is a real game changer. Metallic variable data printing on presses with white ink/toner and a RIP that supports the Color-Logic file format opens up an entirely new value proposition for licensed Color-Logic printers and their clients. To assist current Color-Logic technology partners and dealers, we recently developed a video showing how it quickly and easily metallic variable data files can be prepared using Adobe Illustrator and the Color-Logic design suite palettes. We make available the artwork and sample data sets so Color-Logic licensees can produce the files themselves to show their clients."

Color-Logic showcases unique method for variable data metallic print, available for HP Indigo Digital Presses

West Chester, Ohio, USA; April 2016—Color Logic, the leader in decorative and reflective color communications systems, has introduced a new method for efficient and flexible variable data printing in metallic colors on metallic substrates. The method leverages the combined capabilities of Color Logic’s Process Metallic Color System™ and HP Indigo Digital Presses, providing a unique advantage for HP Indigo users.

The demand for personalization and localization in packaging and labels continues to grow at a rapid rate, with brands needing to better address their target markets, increase the security of their products, and meet the growing demand for more SKUs.

A recently released movie by Color-Logic demonstrates how brands can leverage HP Indigo Digital Presses with white ink and the Color-Logic software to enhance their high-end packaging with personalized messages and versioning. The short clip shows how to add variable content to metallic text, metallic sequential numbering, and even metallic images, across a multitude of print applications.

“The innovation behind this world-first lies in Color-Logic’s unique way of generating white ink plates,” said Richard Ainge, Color-Logic’s CTO. “Previously, archaic methods of generating a white ink plate, such as with manual image processing and masking, meant that VDP could not be done in metallic, since each VDP element would require a unique white ink mask.

“In the past, a job with 10,000 VDP names to be added in would require 10,000 individual white ink masks. Now, with Color-Logic, those white ink masks are automatically generated in the RIP as the file is processed. This makes the whole process far more efficient and flexible, ensuring VDP content can be made metallic, in any one of the 250 metallic colors offered by our system.”

Gershon Alon, WW Manager, Workflow Solutions at HP Indigo, added: “HP Indigo white ink and CMYK, combined with the Color-Logic software on metallic or pearl substrates provide brands with the benefits of variable data printing, while conveying the luxury associated with metallic. This is a real differentiator in the world of digital print and is available with the use of HP Indigo and Color-Logic technology.”
