2. If your PDF does contain the Color-Logic spot color, it could be a problem related to the version of Ghostscript that is installed. We would recommend using v9.55 from our Ghostscript download page – Just download, run the installer to update to the latest version. An empty room environment is usually related to the version of Ghostscript and the Mac OS.

In the meantime, customers running the latest Apple Macs with the M1 chip will need to open Photoshop in Rosetta Mode in order to continue to use the Color-Logic Image-FX plugin – this is because Adobe Photoshop on the M1 chip computers no longer supports HTML5 plugins/extensions and there is no "extensions" menu. However, simply opening Photoshop in Rosetta mode will open Photoshop in the original apple code and allow you to continue to use third party plugins, whilst developers learn the new apple code and redevelop their products. There has been no noticeable speed differences between the silicon version of Photoshop or switching to Photoshop in Rosetta mode, with no loss of function.

To open Photoshop in Rosetta mode:

1. "get info" on the Adobe Photoshop application and switch on "Open using Rosetta" this will then allow the application program to open up using the original apple code and will therefor allow you to continue to use plugins and extensions.
2. Open Photoshop, that's it!

Color-Logic is not affected by Log4j vulnerabilities and we don't use any third party open source Log4j libraries.

Color-Logic is primarily palettes and plugins, none of which are actually "software", which load into Adobe products and whilst we do use java scripting in our plugins, it is just a script to run adobe commands within Photoshop and does not use any Log4j libraries, nor do our plugins have any debugging abilities. The framework of our plugins are HTML5, with jsx scripts for each button, but we are currently rebuilding all plugins in UXP in order to be compliant with the latest Mac OS architecture and M1 chip computers which also will not be affected by Log4j.

Our standalone application program, FX-Viewer, does not use any Log4j libraries and installs on the clients Mac desktop. We also use a 3rd party RIP, Ghostscript, which is used to process PDFs to TIFF to be viewed in our FX-Viewer, this program is also not affected by Log4j, click here for confirmation page from that vendor.

Users should always make sure they are using the most recent update from the Client Login area on the website.

Here is what we would like you to do to resolve the issue:

1. Delete any FX-Viewer folders from Applications > Color-Logic and empty the trash (it is important you empty the trash)

2. Download the latest installer for FX-Viewer from here FX-Viewer 1.03

3. Go to the following location on your Mac and delete the original FX-Viewer ticket file:

Users > Shared > Ticket > delete anything called "FX-Viewer" and empty the trash (it is important you empty the trash)



3. Run the new installer FX-Viewer v1.03  ... it might give you the following pop-up message. If it does, click NO to discard the backup license. This should then allow you to run the installer and do a clean install with the correct version of FX-Viewer.

You need all images closed in Photoshop, if using the drag and drop method of installing, or alternatively, use the file menu for installing – File > Scripts > Browse and then navigate to the .jsx installer file.

• • Color-Logic takes a proactive position towards sustainability which includes elements of product recyclability and other downstream components in a product’s life cycle.
• • There are a number of definitions for recyclability. In the context of printed materials this usually includes steps as de-ink-ability, re-pulp-ability and compost-ability. Marketing of these terms is under the purview of the Federal Trade Commission: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/grnrule/guides980427.htm These are guidelines and not enacted laws. According to this, the end user only has to determine what level of access the general community has, to provide the materials to recycling centers, assuming that the recycler can process the material.
• • Similar like process colors, metallic printing ink can be removed by a standard de-inking process which is typically used in the manufacturing of recycled paper. UV inks are no exception. Radtech has specifically commissioned a study (“Beloit study”) that does prove UV cured materials can be recycled where de-inking processes take place. The exception is for processes that do not use de-inking. The Recycled Paperboard Technical Association (RPTA) has shown that there can be issues where no de-inking is performed. It is believed though that UV cured coatings (due to their heavier film weight and higher degree of polymerization because of no pigments) are more of an issue than offset UV inks. The RPTA also echoed the comments below that the amount of metallic inks entering the waste stream is so small that it is a non-issue.
• • The amount of metallic ink used in comparison to process colors and coatings is typically less than one percent. In a normal deinking process, provided that a representative paper/board mixture is used the influence of metallic inks present can usually be neglected..
• • The majority of metallic inks used is based on Aluminum pigments. Aluminum compounds are ubiquitous and do not pose any harm for the environment. According to NAPIM www.napim.org the use of aluminum, copper and zinc in printing inks is not regulated in the U.S.

This is Apples default way of stopping third party applications from being installed by malware. To bypass this, all you need to do is either Right Click on the installer and select OPEN or Control Click on the installer and select OPEN. You will then see the same warning, but this time it allows you to select "OPEN".

Option 1.
Update to the latest 64bit version of FX-Viewer, which resolves these issues.

Option 2.
Calibrate your monitor using an industry approved device (not the apple display controls in system preferences, you need a dedicated monitor calibration device). Example devices are, Datacolor Spyder5Express, X-rite Eye One Display Pro, etc. Calibrate your monitor and you should be good to go.

Option 3.
If you do not have a monitor calibration device, you can download a ready made profile which you can install on your Mac, using the link below. We have also provided a short video to show you how to install the profile:

If a Color-Logic licensee has any trouble using the tools, installing etc, then it is advised that you consult our extensive FAQ section (sorted in to logical sections), we also offer assistance via email (English only). We have recorded webinars that customers can play at their own convenience, or should a customer want one to one training, then we offer a paid webinar service (English only). However, most users find that the support material we provide is very in-depth and easy to follow. All our documentation (User Manual, Literature etc) is in Multiple language (French, German, Spanish, Italian, Chinese etc)

We also have technical papers, tutorial videos, and some additional sales tools, such as PowerPoints and videos to play at customer visits or events...We like to pride ourselves on creating everything that a user could possibly need, but if there's something we have missed, or you think would be a good idea, please let us know and we will address it.

Our system is normally installed by the customer - usually the prepress person. There's no hardware to install, nothing to add on to your presses, it's just software, colour palettes and plugins for designing! These are installed by our software installers for Mac and PC. We have a section on the Client Login area where customers download the latest installers. All a client needs to do is double click the installer and follow the onscreen instructions!

How to use our tools is easy, designing with metallics is the harder part, which is why we created mini movies of all our effects, so that designers and prepress etc, can watch a simple movie to learn how to do things like, adding a watermark to a metallic area using Adobe Illustrator, or how to make metallic gradations in Adobe InDesign!

Our licensed printers have their own unique login area, with their own installers, with their own unique passwords – It's those installations that we track by linking the printer login area with the installations via IP addresses.

Here's an example of a printers access details, which is unique to that printer:




A Printers external customers, agencies, designers etc, who purchase one of the printers "Design Suite & FX-Viewer" vouchers, is then provided with a similar PDF – Designers have a separate URL landing page, but it is linked to the printers account, they would also be provided with their own login Username and Password. 

Here's an example of access details for an external designer, which is linked directly to the printers account:



Provided that the Printer stays within our S.M.A.R.T Centre program, all parties will always have access to our latest installers (simply go to the INSTALLERS tab and access the latest updates)




If the printer decides to opt out of our S.M.A.R.T Centre program, the links to both the Printers account and all their external customer accounts is cancelled, and as such, nobody will have access to the locked area.

Sometimes a designer/agency will take their business elsewhere! If this happens and the printer no longer wants that agency to have access to the locked area, all that printer needs to do is notify us – We then issue the printer with a new login password, which would also be issued to each of their external customers, except the customer who should no longer have access.

In the visual below, the RIP has failed to process the wine label correctly in the top right hand corner. This is strange, because the more complex and challenging items have all processed correctly:



The most frequent RIP issues are related to Overprints and Transparency settings, that are using by designers. A way to test your RIP, is to utilize the Color-Logic Print Evaluation Test Forms (was per the visual above) – these test forms are designed to highlight issues within the processing of a file. We created these test files to be complex and really push how a RIP performs, by using various design techniques that designers typically use – interestingly, RIP issues often happen on the more simple looking items, such as the wine label on our test forms (shown above), however, that's often NOT an indicator that it's the wine label on the sheet causing the problems – Some RIPs interpret and handle transparency and overprints differently, and in some instances, you can get strange things happening, where some artefacts on the separations do not process correctly. After numerous and painstaking trials to find the offending element on a page, it's usually the use of Illustrator drop shadows that causes RIP issues!

If you do encounter RIP issues, we would advise is to test using different PDF formats – Usually to get around transparency issues, we would recommend output using PDFX-3 which will flatten transparency, although testing of various PDF formats is recommended before you look any keeping in to your art files.

If the problem continues after testing different PDF settings, then the second testing process is to use "flatten transparency" within Adobe Illustrator to manually flatten all the graphical elements.

We would suggest using a calculation of 3g/sq meter for estimating purposes, but it is more realistically closer to 2grams. And of course is dependent on ink film thickness (we recommend a print density of 0.30D - 0.35D T black channel, unpolarized, 0.60-0.70 black channel polarised).

As all jobs vary, and depends on what areas contain metallics, you will have to do some manual calculations based on the above figure. We would suggest breaking it down into sections as follows:

100% Coverage – 3g per m2
75% Coverage – 2.25g per m2 
50% Coverage – 1.5g per m2
25% Coverage – .75g per m2

IMPORTANT: Please watch and monitor your ink consumption levels for more accurate readings as these are only estimates and may fluctuate depending on types of press, ink waste and make ready etc.

This error message is usually due to an issue with your Administrator rights for installing the FX-Viewer application program – The message is telling you that you can't install the tools and folders because you don't have full admin rights, or if you do, it can mean that you have damaged preference files on your Mac.

How to resolve
Locate your Applications Folder and do a "get info" on it, and then ensure your admin settings are "read & Write" but ensure you have "apply to enclosed items" by clicking on the settings fly out menu:




Now try the installation again and it should install correctly for you.

For this to be possible, you have to take in to account the visual appearance of the metallic ink. Silver ink has a visual appearance of about 30% black, so, by printing any color over the top of that silver ink, it's going to darken down and go dirtier as you're literally adding 30% black to that color!

The only Pantone colors that could be matched effectively, would be those that have at least 30% black within the color build – So, for example, if the Pantone color had a CMYK color build of "40c 82y and 30k", you could edit the overprinting color and remove that 30% black – the silver ink you then print on top of would simulate that greyness. If your Pantone color was 40c 82y and 50k, then you would edit the color and remove only 30%k leaving you with 20%k. The silver again making up the remainder.

One other factor that needs to be taken in to account, is that with a wet trap inline printing process, you don't get perfect trapping of the overprinting inks – You only get about 80% of the inks trapping. The only way to get pure trapping, is to print UV or print as a two pass, allowing the silver to cure. The reason we mention this last factor is that even if your CMYK Pantone color had some black in it that you could edit out, your colors may need to be increased by about 20% to counteract the decreased trapping of those overprinting inks when printing wet trap inline.





The above visual shows you how a typical Pantone color would print if you printed it over a metallic ink.

IMPORTANT: The Color-Logic System is it's own unique color space designed for metallic ink printing. The colors that are in our swatch book are the colors that you can design and print with.

The below steps will help identify where a problem is happening, so that you can raise the appropriate support request with your service providers.

Step 1. Check the file within it's source application program. For example, if using Adobe Illustrator, navigate to "Window > Separation Preview" – If your file looks correct, proceed to Step 2.

Step 2. Save a PDF and view within Adobe Acrobat using "Print Production > Output Preview" and check your file is still ok – If it is, move to step 3

Step 3. Send the PDF to the RIP, process the file and then view the ripped data

If any of the above show something different, then you know where the changes are happening and can therefore identity the potential cause of the problem. However, if those files are all correct, then it would imply a mechanical issue or data transfer issue. Please remember that Color-Logic is all done at a the design stage, nothing installs on the press or RIP. If something were wrong with Color-Logic, it would be wrong at the design stage...After all, this is just a five color PDF. There is no secret technology hidden within any Color-Logic job, we use open architecture for our palettes and plugins using Adobe's built in tools, so for Color-Logic not to work, would mean Adobe doesn't work.

In the sign, screen and digital markets, vinyl film manufacturers generally pick paper release liners. Plastic liners are more frequently used for label stock. Paper affords many advantages compared to plastic. It is very heat stable…more stable at high temperatures because plastic can deform. Paper also provides consistent performance. Most importantly, paper is cost effective.

The disadvantage is that because it is paper, it can easily gain or lose moisture depending on the shop environment. When I worked for screen printers, it was a common practice to condition the stock the day before a print run to stabilize the sheet, so it would lay flat on the bed of the press. Sheeted material was racked face to face so the release liner could gain or lose moisture depending on the shop environment.

Changes in humidity can cause paper liners to grow or contract. When exposed to excessive humidity, some liners can grow and curl toward the print. When the liner loses moisture, it can contract causing the sheet to curl toward the liner side. See photograph A.

Regardless of which way the liner curls, it can give printers fits. The solution is a polycoated release liner. Typically a plastic resin is extruded onto either one or both sides of a paper sheet. This gives you the best of both worlds. You can the advantages of a plastic liner, as well as a cost-competitive paper liner. The polyolefin coating improves the resistance of the liner to moisture absorption as well as improving the overall dimensional stability and layflatness of the sheet, as shown in photograph B.

Other factors, however, can affect the dimensional stability of the liner during processing at the film manufacturer or when digitally printing and laminating. Here are a couple of examples:

• During adhesive coating, the release liner is exposed to heat, which can dry the liner out. Exposed to a humid shop environment, dry liners can grow and curl. To combat this problem, many manufacturers will remoisturize their liners.
• Exposure to heat can result in the liner losing moisture, which can result in the liner shrinking causing poor layflat or sheet curl.
• Mechanical tension during lamination can stretch the overlaminate. Stretched films tend to stretch back to their original shape, which can result in the laminated print curling.
Printing with heavy concentrations of solvent or ecosolvent ink can result in the print curling. Solvent inks can consist of 70% or more of solvent. When the solvent evaporates, the inks contracts. This often results in the graphic curling to the print side as shown in photograph C.

This means that all metallic colors are slightly dirtier than the original CMYK color. The color hue will also change due to the interaction of how inks will trap (stick) on top of the metallic. This is why it is always important to use your Color-Logic color guide for selecting colors when you design your job.

TIP: The more colors and the greater the ink percentage printed over the metallic, the less the metallic will be able to show through. Think of each ink as a layer of fine silk cloth. One layer of silk can be seen through, but the more layers you stack up, the more opaque they become. This is the same with inks. All Color-Logic metallic colors take this into account.

In most cases this would be a paper substrate. Although there are many kinds of papers in the market, it is important to consider the type of media - such as gloss, silk, matt, uncoated etc. As with all metallic ink systems, the Color-Logic system is best suited to a gloss white art paper. This type of paper has a smooth surface and will give the best holdout and reflection for the metallic inks. If you use a dull or silk paper, the metallic ink is absorbed slightly into the paper and you lose some of the metallic brilliance. If you were to use an uncoated paper, the results would decrease further. Visit our web site for a listing of certified substrates we have tested with our system.

NOTE: The surface texture of papers will also effect the orientation of the metallic pigment - this is the way in which the metallic particles reflect light. If there are microscopic pits and ripples in the paper it will cause the metallic flakes to reflect light poorly.

TOP TIP: A primer can be used to seal an uncoated paper substrate in order to create a smooth printing surface for the metallic, or a spot white ink to seal specific key areas to the print (i.e the metallic areas) can also be used.

• Traditional Spot metallic = 7 printing plates (CMYK, silver, bronze, gold)

NOTE: The Color-Logic system works by printing CMYK inks over a metallic base ink - if you accurately control the color density, it is very easy to reproduce a job time and time again - this is because the printer measures the CMYK patches on press and prints to their printing conditions (density, tonal value/dot gain etc) in addition to controlling the densities of the Color-Logic silver inks. Reprints of the job would always match provided the printer has good process control in place and can print consistently to their same target printing conditions with the same ink and paper. With spot metallic inks, the printer needs to mix the ink to a recipe, taking multiple colors and mixing them with a metallic ink. This is not a guaranteed process and results differ depending on how the inks are mixed. If these spot colors are mixed and left for a while before printing, the pigment can also settle in the ink and this causes the shade of that ink to change. Printers will be familiar with how difficult it is to match spot metallics colors to an existing printed job.

]]>MetalFX2015-11-13T13:35:32+00:00https://www.color-logic.com/support/faqs/files/f5ccc70a2c38b33bb90c2382b4898dc4-20.html#unique-entry-id-20https://www.color-logic.com/support/faqs/files/f5ccc70a2c38b33bb90c2382b4898dc4-20.html#unique-entry-id-20MetalFX® was a metallic color system for offset printing only.  It used one swatch book, printed on an offset press, and could not be adapted to flexo, gravure, heatset, inkjet, digital, or screen printing.  MetalFX is no longer available.  The company is no longer in business.  The website explaining the process (metal-fx.com) can no longer be accessed.  Like other early metallic color systems, MetalFX produced and provided color swatch books to printers and designers for their clients to match.  The MetalFX swatch books were last produced in 2008, which means that any in circulation today would be out of date due to pigment fading and ink discoloration.  Moreover, the MetalFX system was licensed to the printer under terms and conditions stipulating that the printer was only to use MetalFX branded inks.  These inks were last manufactured at the end of December 2009 (see eckart.net), which leaves MetalFX printers with a defunct system that is no longer supported, nor with any available consumables.

Color-Logic® is a new company developing color communication systems creating special effects for print.  The first Color-Logic system launched, the Color-Logic Process Metallic Color System™, encompasses a completely new, patent pending, fully chromatic process spot color space, fully accounting for ink saturation limits, transparency, and intercoat adhesion between the process inks and the new range of Color-Logic metallic inks.  This new system also brings the industry new image separation algorithms to create a much more natural and photorealistic range of metallic images.  Combined with an extensive range of training and support literature, online and personal WebEx training, and Master Class Tutorial Programs, the Color-Logic Process Metallic Color System is a significant advancement in metallic ink communication.  The system was developed to address developments in print technology, not only for offset printing, but to technologies such as inkjet and digital metallic printing—technologies that previously were not available. Printing process inks over metallics is nothing new.  In fact, printers have been doing so since the late 1980s.  However, unlike previous systems such as MetalFX, the Color-Logic system enables printers to produce their own metallic color charts, for their clients, based on their printing standard, or any ISO standard, or using various specifications such as GRACoL, G7, or SWOP.   Since the printer produces the color charts, the printer controls the system—providing a revolutionary approach to the reproduction of special effect colors systems, including, but not limited, to metallic inks.  The Color-Logic system takes into account several key variables which MetalFX and other systems did not address.  These variables include allowing printers to choose and employ their own paper/substrate, printing characterization curves, process inks, ICC profiles, etc.  So, unlike a generic standard swatch book printed on unknown machines, under unknown conditions, and with just one ink set and paper, printers can now tailor their own metallic charts, fingerprinted to their own equipment, and provide their clients with reproducible effects based on their own machines.

There is a texture size limit, depending on which GPU you use: typically 4K (4096x4096) (although this limit is 8K on high-end GPUs). So if PDF is larger than 4096 pixels / 200 inch in either dimension, this leads to an image that are too large for 3-D rendering.

So if this happens, you will need to create a smaller PDF in order to render it within FX-Viewer.

Any machine originally shipping with 10.5 or higher will be capable of running the application. Upgraded machine will require a GPU roughly 6 years old or newer. Newer integrated graphics machines will actually run the software, but with very slow performance. For MacBooks, this means the Model Identifier at a minimum is, MacBook4,1.
